Abstract
This study evaluated the periosteal response to the subperiosteal implantation of pure titanium in 24 streptozocin induced-diabetic(ID) and 24 non diabetic (ND) rats. The pure titanium microplate was implanted subperiosteally in each rat¡¯s skull. Subgroups of 6 rats from the ID and ND groups were killed at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of postimplantation.
The implants were removed with the surrounding periostium and processed for histologic evaluation. This study was aimed to observe the degree of periosteal inflammation, bone formation and proliferation of collagen between ID and ND rats. The results were revealed that neovascularization and periosteal inflammation was similar at early phase of both group. But from 12 weeks of postimplantation, the degree of inflammation was decreased at ND rats but still remained on ID rats. Collagen maturity and periosteal proliferation increased in ND rats whereas the ID rats showed a marked delay in collagen maturity and density. Increased bone volume around implanted titanium was observed in ND rats but not ID rats. It was concluded that uncontrolled diabetes contributed to prolonged inflammatory response and delay in collagen maturity on subperiosteal implantation.
